Growing
Growth – it’s exciting, but it’s not easy. And, it tends to come in fits and starts. We all go through times of evolution and revolution where some periods feel stable and others feel chaotic. The hardest parts about the revolution stages are figuring out what and how to change. Often, the activities that have made the evolutions successful are exactly those which must be changed if we are to move to the next stage of growth.
Stages of Growth Business Consulting
There is plenty of research showing that your company will go through a number of normal and predictable phases of growth over time. Larry Greiner’s now famous article, Evolution and Revolution as Organizations Grow*, highlighted that as organisations grow in size and age, they pass through stages. The growth (evolution) periods are characterised by certain management styles, while the change (revolution) stages are characterised by a dominant management problem that must be solved before growth can continue. Business Coaching
In his seminal work, The E-Myth*, Michael Gerber observes that small business growth requires you to play multiple roles at once – the entrepreneur, the manager, and the technician. But, it’s hard to be strong in all of these areas at once without losing focus on the big picture or the attention to detail. This is where business coaching can help.
Try a new idea, get some advice, discuss a current challenge, get clear on goals, set some action plans, and learn how to monitor your own progress. Read more about business coaching and the EMyth here.
Professional Development
Just as businesses grow, the leaders and managers within those businesses also need to grow to adapt. Personal and professional growth is a learning process. I have based my professional development programs on the work of Professors Robert Kegan and Lisa Lehey – 2 Harvard Academics who have spent their careers researching the adult learning and development. They help us understand why we as humans are immune to changing and help us overcome that immunity. The personal and professional change helps us to lead, progress, and find meaning in our careers.
I offer a 2-day professional development seminar called ‘Momentum’, which is an ideal program for leadership and employee development – read more.
